His savior

Scotty was a medium sized dog of mixed lineage. He was our only dog for many years, then my sister got a cocker spaniel puppy we called Ginger. We lived on a farm a quarter of a mile from the highway, and we were always afraid someone would hit him as he wasn't at all car smart. He didn't seem to understand that he could be hurt or killed.

If we were playing and making a fuss of the new puppy, I'd look over at Scotty and he'd have such a sad look his face. Having attention showered on a newcomer, should have made him jealous, but that didn't stop him from protecting Ginger when necessary. Scotty had a big and loving heart.

Whenever we heard a car, we'd run outside to find Ginger.

The first time I saw Scotty save Ginger's life, I couldn't believe my eyes. The car was coming around the house at a good clip, and I saw Scotty run in front of the car and put himself between Ginger and the car tires, and pull Ginger out of harm's way by his long ears. He saved Ginger's life many, many times by this ingenious method.

What a wonderful and brave dog he was to put himself in danger to save a little newcomer who stole the limelight and the affection that previously had been his and his alone.

I don't think we'll ever have another dog as smart and brave as Scotty. He truly was a hero.
