Pan Worked it Out
My cat Pan has manipulation (of me) down to a fine art. When she meows and walks into the office where her dish is I know I'm supposed to feed her. When she comes in through the cat door at night when all the lights are off and calls to me I know I have to call to her to let her know that I'm home, and that I'm in bed. Then she runs into my room, jumps on the bed, comes up to where I can reach her for a quick pat, then it's down to the end of the bed where she collapses down, half on top of my left leg.
Recently Pan has figured out the exact time that I get up in the morning and comes in to my room every morning at exactly 6:47 and wakes me up. This is very handy for me because it means that I have a reliable alarm clock which I never have to set. When I thought about how she figured this out I realised that she must have used trial and error. I've been getting up at that time for only a few weeks, and during that period she has come in at various times, hoping that I'll get up, feed her, and pat her. If she got the time too early I wouldn't have gotten up, and if she came in too late she wouldn't get the praise that I tend to lavish on her for being such a fantastic little alarm clock. So I suppose she soon clicked on that the only time worth coming into my room in the morning is 6:47. Such a clever little kitty. And only one mystery remains; how does she know when its's 6:47?
